Don’t Let the Polls Get You Down!

As Congresswoman Betty McCollum said at the St. Paul for Kerry rally on Sunday September 19, the polls will go up and down a lot before the election. Pollsters usually talk to the most frequent voters. Our job is to find all those young people, new Americans, and others who might not have voted before. A lot of them aren’t being counted by pollsters—and a lot of them will vote Democrat! We’ve got to tell them why we believe our country’s future will be better with John Kerry and John Edwards, register them to vote and get them to the polls on November 2nd. I get a sinking feeling in my gut when I see a negative poll, but it’s all the motivation I need to get out and work harder! And the polls that look great for us cannot make us complacent. The bottom line is the votes we turn out in St. Paul and Minneapolis will win this race for the whole state of Minnesota.

Let’s also remember that we need to win only 15 seats for Democrats to take back the Minnesota House. Then we might to able to finally fund our public schools, raise the minimum wage, promote Minnesota’s great renewable energy resources, and meet our budget needs in a fair and equitable way.

Here’s how you can help in St. Paul and the surrounding districts. I’ll be doorknocking for East Metro House candidates and for voter registration in our own District 66 at least once a week, either late afternoon-evening on weekdays, or on Saturdays. It’s a fun way to meet new people, and don’t worry if you haven’t doorknocked before, I’ll help you! It’s easy, fun, and great exercise. Please join me!

I’m also planning to knock on doors during school hours (roughly 10am-noon or 1-3 pm.) during the day to register voters here in St. Paul. The next few weeks until mid-October, the deadline for voter pre-registration, are absolutely critical. (After that date you can still register at your polling place only on election day) We will target college dorms and apartment buildings, both notorious for low voter participation.

I’m not up for election this year so I’m going to do all I can to help elect other great Democrats in Minnesota. Your help is absolutely critical to win this election.
